Masikane Masike is a born and bred Mosotho artist from Maseru, Lesotho. He is an accomplished designer from humble beginnings with deep spiritual beliefs in a higher power as well as the ancestors. As a designer he is motivated by the rich culture and history of the Basotho nation. He is a cultural performance artist and activist.
Semomotela means a beautiful girl or woman and is a positive word to describe great beauty. Queen Masenate strongly advocates for the rights of girls and women. The design features the female shield symbolizing protection for girls and women. The shields are surrounded by hearts, symbolizing the hearts of princesses, Basotho girls and women. In honour and remembrance of the late H.M Queen Mmamohato Bereng, it is also Inspired by the Mokhibo dance. This dance was her favourite form of entertainment and she popularized the female shield. The dance is traditionally a celebration which is often performed on Independence Day, the King’s birthday or other festive occasions.
