The Strelitzia is native to South Africa and thrives in warm, sunny climates. It is featured on the back of the South African 50-cent coin. It is easily recognizable by the vibrant orange and blue crane-like petals which form the unique flower. It is also known as the Bird of Paradise, as once the flower is in full bloom, it resembles the wings of an exotic bird in flight. The Strelitzia is a symbol of freedom and immortality, as well as good luck and prosperity. Due to its bird-like appearance it is often linked to the idea of exploring new horizons and soaring to great heights. Many also view the Strelitzia’s regal and elegant appearance as symbolic of nobility and grace.
