The King Protea is a member of the Protea species, which is one of the oldest flowering plant species on earth. It is also known as the giant protea or king sugar bush and has the largest flower head of all the Protea species. It is the national flower of South Africa and grows in the fynbos biome of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces. Proteas are able to survive in extreme climate conditions, including wildfires and thus have come to symbolize courage, strength and resilience.
They also symbolize diversity due to the wide variety found beyond that of the majestic King Protea. Proteas were named after the Greek god Proteus, who was the son of Poseidon. Proteus had the ability to take on many different forms, just like the Protea which comes in an array of colours, shapes, sizes and textures
