Aloes are found throughout Africa, particularly in the arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa and have a long history of being used for medicinal, cosmetic and cultural purposes. South Africa boasts a wide range of over 150 species. The Aloe ferox is one of the most recognizable as it stands tall and proud with its bright orange flowers pointing skyward. The succulent leaves allow them to survive prolonged periods of drought and their brightly coloured, tubular flowers, mean they are regularly visited by both birds and insects in search of nectar. Aloe ferox, also known as bitter aloe, is most famous for its medicinal properties. Various parts of the leaves are used in pharmaceutical products and the gel-like inner part of the leaves is used in cosmetics. It is also said to help with the healing of wounds. The amaXhosa tell tales of Aloe warriors with their spear-shaped flowers and shield-like leaves, which were often mistaken by British troops as being Xhosa warriors.
